The WCS, or Writable Control Store is a special 256K memory board in the A1000 used for loading Kickstart from disk, as the operating system was too buggy to include in ROM chips. It is also known as WOM, or Write Once Memory.

The board was designed by Dave Needle and shipped in all original NTSC units. Some at Commodore questioned the inclusion of the board as it made the computer more expensive to manufacture.
