AmigaModem

The modem for the Amiga was originally going to be built-in 300 baud unit. There is space on the grey and black box development system boards for a 20 pin header which the modem board would have connected to. Several of these pins are shared with the even 6522 (or 6526) chip. The Audio In and Out signals were implemented so the modem wouldn't need its own speaker. In a memo dated August 27, 1984 Dave Needle outlining the proposed features, including an optional home secretarial system. [1]

Cost Reduction

Once it was decided that there would not be a modem built into the computer, the additional signals were rerouted to the main serial port. This was first implemented on the Velvet motherboard.

Amiga 1680

The first Amiga branded modem was the model 1680, a Hayes compatible, 1200 baud modem which could also be used with an IBM PC or compatible computer.
