Upon joining Amiga, Carl Sassenrath set out to create a multi-tasking operating system. He did so and named it Exec, the heart of the Amiga OS. After Lorraine was refashioned into a personal computer and Commodore bought the company in 1984, he made an outline for a custom DOS, named CAOS (Commodore-Amiga Operating System).

Carl had previously worked at Hewlett-Packard.
