A television set was the standard display for game consoles and early home computers. These were often employed a cathode ray tube (CRT), which would “draw” the screen by sweeping a beam horizontally to generate the picture from the top down. This process would repeat for each frame.

A major difference between a TV set and a monitor is that a TV has a tuner circuit to select the different channels. Originally this technology was all analog.
